19/06/2011 - FORZA VOLVO!

2011 - Podium SPA 12 H - BTCS

After an unbridled sprint at the wheel of their Volvo S60 Vincent Radermecker, Eric van de Poele and Nico Verdonck took the win in the Spa 12 Hours. In sometimes horrible conditions the threesome added the most important BTCS-race of the year to their tally, with a margin of 16 seconds.

When Vincent Radermecker took over from Nico Verdonck at the wheel of the Volvo S60 to start his last stint of the Spa 12 Hours, the tension in the pitbox of the Volvo S60 Racing Team could be cut be a knife. In a pitch black night and heavy rain Nico had given the Swedish bullet a marginal advantage, through some masterly driving. But at the time ‘Rader' took over, the menace from Fred Bouvy at the wheel of the French rival was palpable.

But lap after lap Vincent edged away from the car in second place, sometimes by mere tenths of a second, sometimes by thousandths. Staring at the timing screen the Volvo fans cheered every time the car completed its lap, only to completely erupt when the Volvo took the chequered flag just after 2.30 am.

Cheers, applause, extensive congratulations... Even some mechanics shed a tear of joy and relief. This was a historical win for the Volvo S60, after all.

The win not only puts Vincent Radermecker and Eric van de Poele back in the running for the BTCS-title, but the way in which the magical trio, with strong support of the technical staff of the Campus Automobile Spa-Francorchamps, constructed their performance will go down in history, especially since the competition proved to be strong and tenacious. During the whole 12 Hours the Volvo S60 ran like clockwork, even though the drivers sometimes gave it a rough ride, pitstops were executed to perfection and the strategy swiftly adapted to the ever changing conditions. This win was the result of perfect teamwork and the third win in five races.

“This is our best win since the start of our BTCS-campaign in 2010”, René Aerts, spokesperson for Volvo Cars Belgium, states. “Our Dream Team makes us very proud, the drivers as well as the technical staff. From the start our racing programme spearheaded our marketing campaign and our efforts on the track add to the success of the S60 in the Belgian market.”
